Northern White Cedar is unique to the Northeast region of North America, where it grows from upper Michigan along the Canada-United States border to New Brunswick. It’s a slow-growing tree found mainly in swampy areas. The heartwood of white cedar is light brown, and the sapwood is white or nearly so. The wood has an aromatic spicy ‘cedary or pencil-like’ odor. The wood is lightweight, rather soft, and low in strength and shock resistance, It has an even grain, fine texture, and the lowest density of any commercial domestic wood. It shrinks little in drying. It is easily worked and holds paint well. The heartwood is highly resistant to decay and subterranean termites.
